Understanding Foot Care Education Standards in Canada
As the field of Foot Care Nursing continues to grow, so does the number of educational programs available across Ontario and beyond. While increased access to training is a positive development, it has also led to some confusion among nurses regarding the legitimacy and role of various “associations,” “institutes,” and branded organizations offering foot care courses.
To support nurses in making informed decisions about their education, we believe in providing clear, accurate information based on national standards and emerging certification pathways.
Recognized National Standards
In Canada, the only national organization responsible for establishing and updating Foot Care Nursing standards is the Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses (CAFCN).
Original National Standards published: May 2012
New Updated National Standards: May 2026
Alignment with CNA: The CAFCN standards support the Canadian Nurses Association’s projected 2026 rollout of Foot Care Nursing certification, guiding both educators and clinicians toward consistent, evidence-based practice across the country.
These standards form the foundation for high-quality foot care education and ensure nurses are prepared to meet the expectations of regulators, employers, and clients in a rapidly evolving field.
Clarifying the Role of Other “Associations” and Branded Entities
Across the province, you may encounter programs marketed under titles such as “institutes,” “associations,” or other authoritative-sounding names. It’s important to understand:
These organizations are not regulatory bodies.
They do not set national standards for Foot Care Nursing.
They cannot grant official titles, certifications, or designations recognized by nursing regulators or the CNA.
Many are simply independently created brands developed by foot care educators to represent their courses.
While some of these programs may offer solid hands-on clinical experience, their theory may or may not adhere to CAFCN’s national standards, and this distinction matters—for safety, for practice quality, and for alignment with the upcoming CNA certification framework.
Why Standards-Based Education Matters
Choosing a program anchored in CAFCN’s nationally recognized standards ensures that:
Your education is evidence-informed and consistent with best practice.
You receive training that aligns with the CNA’s forthcoming national certification expectations.
You are prepared to practice safely, competently, and confidently in clinical, community, and independent settings.
You are investing in an educational pathway that positions you for the future of the profession—not just the present.
Our Commitment
At TiredSole® Skills for Nurses, we follow and teach to the CAFCN National Standards (2012 & 2026) and stay fully aligned with the CNA’s projected certification rollout. Our curriculum is built to meet—and often exceed—national expectations, combining rigorous theory with extensive, supervised hands-on clinical practice.
We believe nurses deserve clarity, transparency, and training they can trust.
If you’re exploring Foot Care Nursing as a new direction in your practice, we’re here to ensure your education rests on a solid national foundation—not just good marketing.
